Gold Trading in the UAE: The Clock, the Contract and the Cash You Risk
Gold on a screen is a contract with opening hours, not a bar in a vault, so trade it by the clock.

The Same Metal, a Different Animal Once It Is a Screen Contract
When you buy gold through a broker you are not buying a bar to keep. You are trading XAU/USD, which is one ounce of gold quoted in US dollars, and that distinction changes everything about how you use it. There is no delivery, no storage and no insurance to arrange. What you hold is a position that opens and closes on a platform, and it lives or dies by the hours that platform is quoting.
That matters in the UAE because the trading day here does not line up with the metal's busiest stretch. You are on GST, four hours ahead of London and nine ahead of New York, so the moments when the market is thickest arrive while most of the country is finishing work. Treat gold as a scheduled activity rather than something you glance at between meetings.
The practical consequence is simple. You are not trading gold in the abstract. You are trading it during a specific window on a specific platform, and if that window is thin, your fills will tell you so.
| Part of the day | Local time · GST |
|---|---|
| Busiest window | 16:00-21:00 GST — London and New York open together |
| Thinnest stretch | 01:00-10:00 GST — Sydney alone, wider spreads |
| European open | 12:00-21:00 GST |
| US open | 16:00-01:00 GST |
| Closed | Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday |
The hours are shown for the clocks in force today: GMT for London until 28 March, EDT for New York until 1 November. The UAE does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Mapping the Gold Day onto a Gulf Working Week
The sessions run in a fixed order, and seeing them in local time is the only way to plan around a job. Sydney opens at 01:00 GST and runs to 10:00. Tokyo takes over from 04:00 to 13:00. London runs 12:00 to 21:00, and New York runs 16:00 to 01:00. Gold is quoted across all of it, but the character changes from one block to the next.
The stretch that matters most for a UAE resident is the London and New York overlap, 16:00 to 21:00 GST. Two major centres are active at once, participation is at its deepest, and price movement tends to be cleaner than in the quiet hours. If you can only watch one part of the day, watch that one.
The early Gulf morning is the opposite. Sydney and Tokyo are open, but gold is often drifting rather than trending, and a move that looks decisive at 08:00 can reverse before London arrives. Knowing which session you are in tells you whether a breakout deserves your attention or your patience.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. A high rating is not a permission. The register is where the licence is confirmed.
Reading the Contract Before You Read the Chart
Every platform defines XAU/USD in its own contract specification, and that definition is the number that turns a price move into money. One standard contract is conventionally a set quantity of ounces, but the exact figure, along with the minimum trade size and the tick value, sits in the broker's contract specification page. Open it before you open a position, not after.
This is also where the money question gets answered honestly. The amount you gain or lose per point of movement depends on the contract size, your position size and your account currency, and none of those are things anyone can guess for you. The platform, or the broker's own calculator, will produce the figure. Your job is to read it rather than assume it.
If you are comparing platforms, compare them on this page first. A clear contract specification and a clear funding page tell you more about how a firm operates than any advertisement does.

| How often it moves | Every trading day | — |
| The rate your account uses | Your broker's own conversion | The broker's rate card |
| Symbol on this site | AED | — |
An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. Your broker's conversion will not match this rate, and that difference is a real cost.
Setting the Loss First, Then Letting the Clock Do the Rest
Gold moves enough in a single session to make position size the difference between a bad hour and a bad month. The workable approach is to decide, in advance, what a losing trade is allowed to cost you, and then let the contract specification tell you how large a position that permits. Sizing backwards from the loss keeps the decision in your hands rather than the market's.
Then place that decision inside the right hours. A position sized for the 16:00 to 21:00 GST overlap may be far too large for the thin pre-London morning, because the same ounce of gold can travel further on less news when fewer participants are watching. Size and session are one decision, not two.
Before any money moves, confirm two things: which regulator covers the firm, and how a deposit and withdrawal actually travel. In the UAE three regimes coexist, the Capital Market Authority onshore, the DFSA in the DIFC and the FSRA in the ADGM, and the licence tells you which one handles a complaint. Check the CMA register at uaecma.gov.ae, and check the broker's funding page for the rails it supports, which typically include bank transfer, local bank transfer, card and international wire.

A figure with no source and no date is a guess with good manners. Anything we could not trace is left out rather than printed from memory.
The Evening Liquidity Window Is Not the Same as Your Broker's Dealing Desk Hours
Gold's busiest stretch for UAE residents falls in the late afternoon and evening, when London and New York overlap. That is when quotes tighten and orders fill cleanly. It is also when a broker's dealing desk is most likely to be staffed properly, so a problem gets answered by a person rather than a queue.
The failure mode is assuming this window and your broker's support hours are the same thing. Some firms quote prices around the clock but only handle account queries during office hours elsewhere. If a withdrawal or a dispute starts at 21:00 GST, the price may be live while the humans are not.
Before committing size to an evening session, check the broker's published client support hours and where those hours sit in GST. That detail decides whether a stuck order at 22:00 is a five minute call or an overnight wait. The clock on the wall governs both the market and the help desk.
Practical consequence: a trade placed at the liquid hour can still be unmanaged at the illiquid hour if support has closed. Keep the position size modest enough that an unanswered query overnight does not force a decision you would not make in daylight. Liquidity and service availability are separate clocks.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - Ejari or utility bill; requirements differ per firm. What a particular firm will take is written on its own account-opening page.
Funding a Gold Account Moves Through Your Bank, So the Bank's Clock Applies Too
Money reaches a trading account by bank transfer, local bank transfer, card or international wire. Each route has its own clearing rhythm, and none of them is instant in the way a card payment at a shop feels instant. The broker's funding page states the method; your bank app shows the actual movement.
The order of operations matters. Confirm the payee details on the broker's own funding page, then compare them with what your bank app shows before sending. If the two disagree, stop. A funding page and a bank app are the only reliable sources for where money goes, and a mismatch is a warning, not a rounding error.
A common failure is treating a submitted transfer as a funded account. It is not. The balance appears only when the bank completes the movement and the broker credits it. Planning a trade around money that has left your account but not arrived leaves you watching a market you cannot act in.
For UAE residents, the name on the bank account must match the name on the trading account. Third party funding creates a reconciliation problem that can delay or block a withdrawal later. Keep the chain of names clean from the first deposit, because the same rule will be applied when you ask for money back.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Use the company name from the site's footer - that is what a register will know it as.
A Withdrawal Is a Two Stage Event, and Only the Second Stage Is Finished
Requesting a withdrawal and receiving one are different milestones. The first is a request logged in the broker's system. The second is money visible in your bank account. Between them sit internal review, payment processing and the banking rail itself, each with its own timing that the broker does not fully control.
The failure mode is closing the loop at the request. A confirmation screen or an email saying the request was received proves nothing about arrival. Until the funds show in the bank app, the process is open, and any plan built on that cash is built on an assumption.
This matters most when the withdrawal funds the next position. If the money is still in transit, the account balance may already reflect the deduction while the bank balance does not. Trading against that gap risks a margin shortfall that looks like a market problem but is actually a settlement timing problem.
Keep the request reference and the bank record together. If a withdrawal stalls, the first question is which stage it stalled at, and the paperwork answers that faster than a support queue. The bank app remains the only proof that the second stage actually happened.
How deposits and withdrawals travel
- Local bank transfer
- Limits set by your bank and the broker
- Card
- Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
- International wire
- Bank transfer — limits set by your bank and the broker
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Read the limits in the provider's app, then on the broker's funding page, and keep the payout route the same as the deposit route.
Can I trade gold from the UAE during normal office hours?
You can, but you will usually be trading the quieter part of the day. Sydney and Tokyo are open through the Gulf morning, and gold often moves without conviction until London arrives at 12:00 GST. If your schedule only allows daytime trading, expect smaller, choppier ranges and size accordingly. The busiest stretch, the London and New York overlap from 16:00 to 21:00 GST, falls after the working day for most people here.
Where do I find out how much one gold position is worth per point?
The broker's contract specification page carries the contract size, the minimum trade size and the tick value for XAU/USD. Combine those with your own position size and account currency, and the platform or the broker's calculator will give you the money figure. Do not rely on a remembered number from another platform, because specifications differ between firms. Read the page for the account you actually hold.
How do I know which regulator to complain to about a gold broker?
Start with the licence the firm holds. Three regimes operate in the UAE: the Capital Market Authority onshore, the DFSA in the DIFC and the FSRA in the ADGM. The one named on the licence is the one that handles a complaint, so the answer changes from firm to firm. You can check the CMA register of licensed companies at uaecma.gov.ae before you fund an account.
